Artificial Soul's Architectural Aspirations (Wip Thread- Currently: I am going to get stuff done soon, I swear)

Post by Artificial Soul » Wed May 17, 2017 12:39 pm

In anticipation of Twisted goodness in the near future, I'm going to get in a little early with a WiP thread as I've some leave coming up and plan to make great and terrible things. Expect actual content Jun 1-3, as uni assignments are due on the 2nd but work leave starts Jun 1. :D

Among these plans is to build a gameboard (on the cards since 2013, didn't possess the time and money till now) and fill it with terrain!

Currently the plan is to make 6x4 worth of boards but break them up into smaller, more modular pieces with some fixed terrain but also room for scatter pieces.

As of now, I have:
-Hirst Art molds
-22.5kg of hydrocal stone
-Hopes and Dreams
-Coarse cutting knife thingy
-Other misc stuff

On the list:
-Knauf XPS from Bunnings
-MDF from Bunnings
-Glue
-Hot wire foam cutter
-foamcore boards
-Stuff I've forgotten to include at time of writing

So far, all I know is that I want two types of winding corridors/alleys for the board- Your Typical Back Alley(tm) and an Alchemantic Bazaar, for Purveyors of Fine Magic (also tm) :P
I also want massive buildings to block line of sight (but also be cloistered) so there's something massive and eye-catching on the board. Unsure currently about adding in water effects ala a canal, but having leaking pipes, puddles, suspicious looking red smears are a must.

WiP log- to show how I did things and such, plus where I obtained stuff.
Update 1: Experiment with bottle making, #12 sequin pins (Riot Art) work a treat and anchor size 8E (3mm) glass beads (ebay).

Oh cool! Another table! I look forward to seeing this one come together!
I also have quite a pile of hirst arts casts at home and if you need anything feel free to ask (you too Trysterio!).

I'm really interested in seeing how you put together your table! Thanks for sharing - it's super cool to see these tables coming together, it makes me feel creative :D

Thanks Pete and Seb, blame Trystero for this! His table project has motivated me enough to finally get moving on my own- it's always been on the to-do list and Twisted is the perfect opportunity to go nuts on the terrain!

While I should be working on assignments, I did take a break and popped out to my nearest Riot! artstore to have a squizz and spend money. I picked up a few #12 sequin pins as they're going to come in immensely handy with my Alchemantic Bazaar and other curiosity shoppes. Combined with some glass beads purchased off ebay (as I could only find the plastic stuff) I, Artificial Soul, present to you....

*drum roll*

A bottle!

Ok, so one isn't too impressive by itself, but that's where all of this comes in:

Diabolical Plan #2 is to assemble all of these into various stacks, shelves, trays and tables of alchemical potions for consumption and/or topical application. There's all sorts of potions to be made, from A Storm In A Teacup to Bottles of Brashness (25% gin, 65% belligerence, 10% water)
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.

Wow yeah that is actually a really cool idea to make a bunch of alchemical vials and flasks - or even some kind of Egyptian canopic jars. Good thinking!

Thanks guys, there's going to be more where they came from! I'm not scot free just yet, so I can only do small things in between assessment items.

For canoptic jars that are sort-of in scale with the minis, I'd probably grab an opaque brown/copper oval bead and just use the sequin pin head as the lid of the jar. Picked up some more regular beads and some oval ones in assorted colours to make some chaotic vendor stalls- There's a thousand and one ideas running amok for these :D

Hey Artificial Soul, good to see you're trying out the table idea! How are you planning on doing the modular boards, will they be 2x2? Also do you know how you'll be designing them so they align with matching terrain (roads, walls, canals etc) for different orientations?

If you've already picked up the foamboard I'm sure you've discovered how light it is, it might be worthwhile basing it with chipboard or better yet, creating a frame that all the foamboard tiles can sit inside - otherwise they're going to move and be bumped quite easily.

I love the use of the beads and sequins for terrain decoration. They'll make for some great and varied scatter terrain too. Keep us up to date on this :D
